Begin with making a list
To begin with, it’s vital that you know what you’re going to be using the vehicle for, how much you’re likely to use it and what budget you are able to stretch to. If you set yourself limits, be careful to stick to them or you might regret it later.
Whilst there can be something intimidating about buying a used car, if you know what you’re looking at and you’re clear on what you want, there’s no reason why you can’t purchase a great quality car for a really reasonable price. Consider buying in April and October
Generally speaking, there are two months of the year that are best for buying a used car, April and October, this is because new cars in the UK go on sale in March and September, meaning that lots of car dealers are overwhelmed with customers wanting to part exchange past models or older cars for new ones. The best used car deals are often available at this time of year; salesmen are usually willing to compromise on price a little more as they have plenty more coming in.
Know your category
Used cars typically come in one of several categories; a city car, a supermini, a small family, a medium, executive, and luxury, unless you’re looking for something more specific – like a classic or a sports car.
Main Dealer Used Cars
In many dealers across the country, you might have some ‘used approved’ cars up for consideration, this means that the vehicle has low mileage and is in great condition – sometimes almost as good as the brand new cars. Full service history is guaranteed and all faults will have been repaired. This scheme is great as there is still money to be saved in comparison with a new model – and there are still warranty’s available depending on where you shop, there’s no need to worry about past accidents or problems, and at many companies you can opt for a payment plan to spread the cost.
It’s good sense to pick up a price guide before you start shopping seriously, you don’t want to pay over the odds for the car you want, so they’ll give you some idea about what budget you should be considering. The prices aren’t set in stone, but it’s good to have some kind of benchmark on valuation.
