The issue of Car Insurance is widely spoken about and is getting more and more expensive year on year. It’s so important to get the right policy and not take short-cuts.

Insuring your car will be one of the largest expenses you have, some yearly policies exceed the price of the car itself. In every respect shop around, many of the large comparison sites are good, and you can input the cars registration number to get a quote – this is useful if comparing policies with different cars and engine sizes for example.

Cutting the cost of Car Insurance

If you need to cut the price of a policy, then consider using some of these ways to cut the cost of your car insurance:

  • Garage your car at night
  • Fit extra security features
  • Take an Advanced Driving Course
  • Consider taking a higher insurance excess on the policy
  • Cut out features like free hire car, windscreen cover and breakdown cover
  • Consider using one of the newer slimmed down policies, which really cut the features, but also trims the price
  • Fix the mileage
  • If you are a Young Driver, then consider a tracker and don’t drive at night


Car Insurance and Selling Your Car

Remember, the car insurance element when selling your car, and by this we mean:

  • When marketing your car, if it carries a high car insurance risk, then make sure this is disclosed, and it might not be the best idea to market it to a young or higher risk driver
  • When looking for a used car, use one of the comparison sites to get a quote on that exact vehicle, and make sure you budget for the expense
  • BE LEGAL: When offering test drives in your car, or test driving a car yourself make sure you have proper cover.

CAR INSURANCE TERMS

Third Party, Fire and Theft
This covers you for damage to another vehicle, and also for damage due to fire or your car being stolen.

Comprehensive
Covers everything Third Party does, but also covers you for damage to your car.

Insurance Excess
This is the part of the claim that you pay should you go ahead and make a claim on your policy. The newer style “cheap” car insurance policies have larger excesses.

No-Claims Discount
This is a benefit that insurers give you should you not make any claims on your policy. In effect it marks you out as a careful driver, and therefore carry less risk.
