Dealers

There are literally thousands of used car dealers in the UK, both online and onsite, and there are pros and cons for using either one. Don’t be intimidated by a dealer, or assume they’re out to fleece you, whilst it’s good to be wary and do your homework just making sure you ask the right questions could make all the difference.

Inspected, warranted and safe

Firstly, used car dealerships are under obligation to make sure that every car that comes into their possession is fully inspected and certified as a safe vehicle – ask to see this certificate. Other details dealers should be aware of are; the maintenance records, who certified the car, and who inspected it – used cars should be certified ‘pre-owned’ by their manufacturers.

Most dealers will be only too happy to let you take a car out for a test drive, particularly if the market is in a slump, you might even be able to take it overnight, providing you put your agreement in writing beforehand. Consumer-friendly dealerships will also probably offer you some kind of return policy like company credit, there are very few that will give you cash back if you change your mind about a purchase. As far as price goes when buying from a used car dealer, cash is always going to be the cheapest option. Salespeople have much less paperwork to deal with if they take cash over finance, so it could be worth your while saving your money to pay upfront. That said, some dealers get a bonus for selling finance, so they may try and push you towards that.

With service in mind, it really depends on where you shop to begin with. Some dealers will be eager to make a sale and added warranties are a great extra that will save you some headaches if your car needs repairs. It’s also vital that you find out what services have been performed on the car before it came to the sale lot, complete overhauls before purchase can only work to your advantage.
